PSI + INSPIRE + Location benefits UK economy!
   epsiPlatform, 20th January 2010

“The UK Location Council is pleased to publish its first annual report covering the period since it was established in November 2008 through until December 2009. The report covers progress to date and sets out the action plan for the 2010-11 timeframe.”

The 48-page report refers to the re-use of public sector information in a number of places and states under the heading: Important developments relevant to location information (reference page 14)

“Other initiatives are being driven from Europe, such as the EU INSPIRE Directive, the Shared Environmental Information Systems (SEIS) project, the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) initiative and the European Directive on the Re-use of Public Sector Information, which was implemented in the UK in 2005. From a world-wide perspective, many countries are on the same journey and there are many lessons learned that can be applied to the UK, e.g. from Norway and Canada.”

“In the UK, the UKLC has closely monitored and supported these influential initiatives. This includes contributing to the work being undertaken by The National Archives which has central policy responsibility for delivering the re-use agenda. A key part of this work involves developing simpler and more transparent licensing solutions that will encourage and facilitate the re-use of public sector information. The UKLC has also contributed to the work of the Cabinet Office Digital Engagement Unit’s Making Public Data Public initiative. Location is high on the Government’s information agenda and forms a key element of the wider Government Information Strategy.”
